Circumstances changed Prithusen’s father Prestha, a wily, cunning, and the richest man of Sagal uses this opportunity and suggests to his son, in order to gain more power he ought to marry the president’s granddaughter. He was unable to stand up for himself and his love, tilted towards absolute power, and agreed to give up Divya.
Shocked and saddened by his betrayal, Divya leaves home with her ‘Dhay Maa’ to save her family’s honor, faces a long struggle in the quest for her own life, sold as a slave, and forced to feed her mistress’ child rather than her own. with the prospect of being separated from her child, runs to the Buddhist monastery where she learns the rejection on the basis of just being a single woman, protected neither by her father, husband, or son. She also learns “it is only a prostitute who is really free” – she is free to use her body the way she wishes, beholden to none.
Her son dies and she is adopted by a courtesan named Ratnaprabha, where her talent for dancing is recognized, and she gains name, fame, and wealth, and meets Marish and Rudradhir, both of whom ask for her hand in marriage. However, she no longer wants the protection of a man, because all she wants is freedom, which, she believes, she can get only as a prostitute.
She returns to the land of her birth. Being a Brahmin by birth, she cannot aspire to the title of state courtesan. She is now faced with the ultimate choice – the offer of marriage and status by Rudradhir, acceptance as a Bhikshu by Prithusen the monk, and the marriage cum companionship of Marish, the outcast. What she chooses to do is something that depends on you.

🌈Impressions
Marish is my favorite character in the book, he is a logical atheist and says to find everything in this world, there is no god no heaven no hell existed everything is the imagination and tool of powerful people to control everything in favor of them.
What really struck me about the book is this: It was written before independence – it could almost be a metaphor for India seeking her independence from the shackles of the outsiders, and also from the chains of tradition. It is a story set in the first century, yet the situation holds true even today. The Global Gender Gap Report 2022, and India's Rank 135 out of 146 countries.
How I Discovered it
First I heard about this book in a lecture by Dr. Vikas Divyakirti. In the video where he shortly explains this book and the struggle of Divya in the quest for her own life as a woman of freedom.
🍀How the Book Changes Me
Made me more aware of the fearsome caste system of India.
Aware of some economic, emotional, and social issues related to the life of a woman with absolutely zero protection.
